Amarillo celebrates Cinco de Mayo this weekend with events, specials

Local Amarillo organizations will be celebrating Cinco de Mayo with upcoming events including parades, festivities, a specially themed Sod Poodles game, fajita festivals and more.

Cinco de Mayo Parade

On Saturday, May 4, Amarillo community members will host their annual Cinco de Mayo parade, from 10 a.m. to noon.

The parade will begin at 10 a.m. at Alamo Park, traveling down Arthur Street toward East Park and back to the Alamo Park. The parade will include floats, music and live performances from dance group Al Son de Folklore.

3rd Annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration

El Barrio Lion Club of Amarillo will host their 3rd annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. at Alamo Park. The event will include complementary hot dogs and hamburgers, T-shirt giveaways, vendor booths including local first responders offering vehicle tours, traditional dancers performing and much more. These events will follow the Cinco de Mayo Parade.

Street Toyota Cinco de Mayo Celebration

Street Toyota of Amarillo hosts their Annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration on Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. at the dealership, located at 4500 S Soncy Rd.

The event is free and open to the public and includes food, games and face painting and more.

Cinco De Mayo Fiesta

MJ Saloon hosts their Cinco de Mayo Fiesta on Saturday at MJ's Saloon and Grill, located at 3705 Olsen Blvd. Suite A.

During the event, guests are invited to enjoy music from DJ's Gilby Cent, Mikey Mike and Keith Hez. Drink specials including their limited offer of "El Cantarita Gigante" will be offered, with plenty of opportunities for dancing and more.

Sod Poodles Cinco De Mayo

The Amarillo Sod Poodles invites the community out for their Cinco de Mayo celebrations presented by Dean Boyd on Sunday, May 5 beginning at 11:30 a.m. at Hodgetown Stadium, located at 715 S. Buchanan St.

During the event, guests can their enjoy limited 21 and up t-shirt giveaway, Casa Mexico Tequila Tastings, four food trucks, a mariachi band, dancers, drink specials, and the chance to meet special guest Mario Lopez, who will be in attendance courtesy of Casa Mexico.

Lopez will do a pre-game interview on the field, throw the first pitch, and have a public meet and greet by the team store. Lopez fans will also have the opportunity to win a signed baseball and a private meet and greet; the winner must be in the stadium and present to win.

Following the festivities, the Amarillo Sod Poodles will play against the Midland Rockhounds beginning at 1:05 p.m.

Fajita Festival

As a continuation of the celebration of Hispanic heritage, the Amarillo Hispanic Chamber of Commerce will host its annual Fajita Festival on Friday, May 10 from 6 to 10:30 p.m. at Hodgetown Stadium.

According to the organization, attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy all-you-can-eat fajitas, while supplies last, or enter to win the fajita cooking competition.

Cinco de Mayo Specials

Some local restaurants offering specials in honor of Cinco de Mayo include:

  • The Drunken Oyster hosting an all day Cinco de Mayo party from 11 a.m. to midnight on May 5 including drink specials, food and live music.

  • Fuzzy's Taco Shop celebrating May 5 from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. offering specials on queso, tacos, and margaritas.

  • The Western Horseman Club celebrates the day with food, drink specials and a live performance from the Solano Project beginning at 6 p.m.

  • Chuy's Amarillo celebrating Cinco de Mayo with drink specials and their new Green Chile BBQ Ribs, Pablo’s Enchiladas and Fat Daddy Flautas.
