Poet and activist Amanda Gorman just arrived at the Met Gala. Gorman is one of the four co-hosts at the event, along with Timothée Chalamet, Billie Eilish, and Naomi Osaka. The poet, best known for delivering her poem at President Joe Biden's inauguration, included several hidden messages in her stunning outfit for the night.

Gorman wore a vibrant blue, strapless Vera Wang gown, featuring a high-low hemline. The poet paired the dress with matching blue heels and diamond and sapphire earrings. In her hair, Gorman nodded to her profession, sporting a sparkling laurel headpiece. In speaking with Keke Palmer during the red carpet arrivals, Gorman noted that historically, poets, as an honor, wore a laurel crown headpiece. Of course, Gorman elevated the tradition with her luxurious take on the shape.

In another special touch, Gorman carried a blue clutch shaped like a book. On the front of the clutch reads "Give us your tired." Gorman told Palmer that the line references the poem on the Statue of Liberty. The famed statue also holds a book, like Gorman at the gala. Mounted on the statue's pedestal is a poem entitled "The New Colossus" by poet Emma Lazarus. One of the sonnet's most famous lines is "Give me your tired, your poor, / Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, / The wretched refuse of your teeming shore."

The Statue of Liberty reference is particularly fitting for tonight's Met Gala theme, American fashion. The annual event opens the new Costume Institute exhibit, entitled "In America: A Lexicon of Fashion."
