Amanda Bynes is opening up about a cosmetic procedure she’s had. The former child star shared in an Instagram Story on Monday that she had a blepharoplasty, aka bleph surgery, to remove excess eyelid skin.

Amanda explained in the video, which was obtained by Page Six, that she wanted to speak up about the procedure after the 37-year-old noticed people were talking about her “new look.”

But what is bleph surgery and how long do the results last? Here’s the deal.

What is bleph surgery?

Bleph surgery is a procedure that removes excess skin and fat above and below the eyelids, according to the Mayo Clinic. That excess skin can cause sagging eyebrows, droopy upper lids and bags under the eyes, and it can reduce side vision, the organization notes.

The goal of the surgery is to reduce or get rid of those vision problems, and it can also make a person’s eyes look younger and more alert, per the Mayo Clinic.

How long does it last?

The surgery takes about 45 to an hour if someone is having their upper eyelids done, according to the Cleveland Clinic. It usually will take about two hours if both the upper and lower eyelids are done at the same time.

The results from upper eyelid surgery may last anywhere from five to seven years to a lifetime, while lower eyelid surgery usually just needs to be done once, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

How much does it cost?

Cost of any plastic surgery often depends on where you have it done and the individual surgeon’s fee. However, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons says the average cost is around $3,339—but that doesn’t include the cost of anesthesia, the operating room, or other fees that are often tacked on.

What did Amanda say about it?

Amanda had a lot to say about her surgery, noting that she was “never open about this before.” The Hairspray alum said she had bleph surgery on the skinfolds and outer corners of her eyes. “I don’t have those skinfolds anymore,” she said. (Amanda didn't specify when she had the procedure done.)

“It was one of the best things I could’ve ever done for my self-confidence, and it made me feel a lot better in my skin, so I just wanted to post about that just to clear up that rumor as to why I have a new look,” she continued. “I feel a lot better now about myself, and I’m so glad I had the blepharoplasty surgery."
