Melania Trump, Amalija Knavs

Melania Trump's mother, Amalija Knavs, has died at age 78, the former first lady announced via social media.

On Tuesday, Jan. 9, Trump took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share the news.

"It is with deep sadness that I announce the passing of my beloved mother, Amalija," she wrote. "Amalija Knavs was a strong woman who always carried herself with grace, warmth, and dignity. She was entirely devoted to her husband, daughters, grandson, and son-in-law."

Trump continued: "We will miss her beyond measure and continue to honor and love her legacy."

In the comments, X users expressed their condolences, with one person writing, "So sorry for your loss, she was a beautiful, strong woman and wildly proud of you. Sending your family all my love and prayers."

Another person commented, "My heart goes out to you Mrs. Trump, you will be in my prayers during this rough transition."

Meanwhile, someone else wrote, "My deepest sympathies to you and your family. You are her greatest legacy. You're all in my thoughts and prayers."

In 2018, Amalija and Melania's father, Viktor, officially became U.S. citizens. They immigrated from Slovenia, where Melania was born.

Former President Donald Trump publicly mentioned his mother-in-law's health during a New Year's Eve event at Mar-a-Lago.

"Melania, great first lady, so popular, the people love her, she's now in a hospital with her mother," the former POTUS said. "Her mother, Amalija, is very ill, but hopefully she'll be recovering."

In addition to Viktor and Melania, Amalija is survived by a daughter, Ines, and grandson, Barron Trump.
