Amal Clooney Joked About Sharing a Husband With Meryl Streep
"It does occur to me that we have something special in common ... "
Who’s at the top of their field, has impeccable red carpet style, and can say they’ve been married to George Clooney? Well Amal Clooney, of course, but also … Meryl Streep.

On Thursday, Clooney accepted the Gwen Ifill Press Freedom Award from the Committee to Protect Journalists. Streep introduced the human rights lawyer, praising Clooney for her important work and the contributions of the Clooney Foundation for Justice. The actress said that her friend “exemplifies the tireless struggle for press freedom and justice,” adding that “she's not only something every journalist needs, which is a great lawyer, but she's also a defender of the international laws that make free expression possible.”

In Clooney’s own virtual address, the accomplished lawyer lamented not being able to “share a stage with the brilliant Meryl Streep,” as the ceremony was originally supposed to take place in N.Y.C. After thanking the celebrated actress for her introduction, Clooney called Streep “an inspiration as a woman, as an artist, as a press-freedom advocate.”
And oh, there’s something else …
“I know I can't ever hope to win the number of awards that you've won,” Clooney continued, “but it does occur to me that we have something special in common, which is that we've both been married to my husband. And honestly, the fact that you did it as Mr. and Mrs. Fantastic Fox just makes that so much less awkward.”
“The arc doesn’t just bend towards justice on its own. Courageous individuals bent it for us. And now it’s our turn to play our part,” says human rights lawyer Amal Clooney at #IPFA.#AmalClooney is the 2020 recipient of the Gwen Ifill #PressFreedom Award. pic.twitter.com/dfq44yzEdz

Clooney is of course alluding to the 2009 animated film Fantastic Mr. Fox, in which George Clooney plays the titular fox and Streep his wife, Mrs. Fox.

Back in 2017, when then-President-elect Donald Trump called Streep “overrated” following her public criticism of the reality TV host, George hit back. Joking, he told People, “I’ve always said that about Meryl.”
“She’s maybe the most overrated actress of all-time. She and I worked together on Fantastic Mr. Fox as husband and wife and I will tell you even as a fox, a female fox, she’s overrated,” he went on, adding a direct question for Trump himself: “Aren’t you supposed to be running the country?”
Ah, to be one of George Clooney’s wives …
