A harrowing (and common) fear was realized for actress Alyssa Milano this week. On August 18, she told the world via Twitter that she was in a car crash after her uncle suffered “a serious heart attack” while driving.

She called the accident a “terrifying and traumatic event,” giving thanks to bystanders who stopped to help. “I’ll never be able to thank them enough for the care and attention they, along with the first responders, doctors, nurses, and staff at UCLA Medical Center paid to him and to me,” she wrote.

Continuing the Twitter thread, the 48-year-old asked the public for privacy as her family navigates this difficult time. “Uncle Mitch is such an important part of our family. He’s with us every day, spending time with my children and present in every meaningful part of our lives,” she wrote. “He’s still in the hospital, and we are unsure if he will recover.”

She also alluded that she performed CPR on her uncle at the scene, writing, “Please, take this as your inspiration to get CPR certified. You don’t know when you’ll be called upon to save a life. The American Red Cross and many hospitals and other organizations offer regular classes. It’s such a small effort and can have a huge impact.”

According to a California Highway Patrol press release obtained by People, Milano’s uncle, Mitch Carp, was driving down a California interstate when he went into cardiac arrest, causing the vehicle to drift into the next lane and strike a passing SUV. “With the assistance of a good Samaritan,” the statement read, Milano was able to bring their vehicle to a stop and left the crash uninjured.

So far, the Charmed star hasn’t provided further updates on Carp’s health, but this scary event has reminded her how important it is to be as safe as possible in all situations.

“We should all take every opportunity we have to protect the people we love,” she tweeted on August 17. “Get vaccinated. Wear masks. Lock up your guns. Learn CPR. Small, common-sense actions. It’s not hard to take care of each other, but it is important.”
