Altoona launches new amenity to help get kayaks, canoes on the water at Spring Creek Park

Altoona launched a new amenity on Monday that got the mayor on the water.

City officials staged a ribbon cutting for the new boat ramp and launch on the south pond of Spring Creek Park, near the intersection of Northeast 80th Street and 30th Street Southeast. The launch is a track that lets riders in small boats, such as a kayak or a canoe, propel themselves into the water with handles on each side.

The launch makes it easier to get in and out of the water, including for people with disabilities.

Mayor Dean O'Connor demonstrated how to use the launch in a small blue kayak at the event on Monday. He said ahead of the launch that there will be future phases to add trails, fishing piers and other recreational amenities.

The boat launch project was partially funded by a $20,000 Prairie Meadows grant.

The public is welcome to use the boat dock, launch and ramp to fish or enter the water. The south pond is up to 45 feet deep in some places and has a variety of fish, including catfish, bluegill, bass and crappie, according to a news release.

Boats with gas engines are not allowed on the pond.
