Alterra Mountain Company Closes Acquisition Of Historic Mike Wiegele Helicopter Skiing

Mike Wiegele Helicopter Skiing (MWHS), located in the heart of the Caribou, Monashee, and Rock Mountain Ranges, is a bonafide piece of skiing's history.

Having started in 1970, Mike and Bonnie Wiegele laid the groundwork for modern heli skiing operations to spread across Canada, and eventually the globe.

54 years later, MWHS has been sold to Alterra Mountain Company, the purveyors of the popular Ikon Pass and owners of a handful of the United States' premiere ski resorts.

The announcement was shared to POWDER via press release on Thursday, April 25th, 2024.

The acquisition compliments Alterra's holdings in CMH Heli-Skiing, another popular outfit in Canada. Jared Smith, President and CEO of Alterra, provided a statement regarding the acquisition:

“With the acquisition of Mike Wiegele Helicopter Skiing, we are excited to add another premier heli-skiing operation to the Alterra family,”

“We intend to continue the legacy that Mike Wiegele and his family built that helped set the standard for the extraordinary guest and employee experiences, which directly aligns with our values at Alterra.”

MWHS has been around for a while, but their operation is anything but dated.

On top of their 1.5 million acres of skiable terrain spread out over 1,000 peaks, MWHS sports 22 handcrafted log chalets, a 20,000-square-foot main lodge, the exclusive Albreda Lodge, and a full-service sports shop.

In short, it will fit perfectly into Alterra's ever-expanding portfolio.
