You could argue that Marnie Michaels might be the most predictable character on HBO's Girls, but the actress who portrays Marnie, Allison Williams, isn't afraid of a dramatic change. So when the starlet went into hair and makeup for her March Allure cover shoot (she also appeared on the cover in 2014), she went for it. All the way. Allison Williams with platinum blonde hair, courtesy of colorist Aura Friedman, is a literal vision—one that we needed to find out more about.

(Psst: If you're not in the know with NYC colorists—no judgment, it's definitely a niche space—Aura Friedman is the guru of colorists when it comes to all things blonde. Friedman also happens excellent with pretty colors like pink and purple—and has a celebrity- (and regular-person) cult-following for her coloring skills.)

With Friedman's skills (seriously, her Instagram is all the proof) and a bold AF attitude, the lifelong brunette didn't balk at the idea of going blonde. In order for Williams to settle on a shade, Friedman eased her into the stark change by reviewing a slew of tones to find one that would suit the actress. “We were thinking about vintage movie stars, like Brigitte Bardot,” Friedman told Allure.

After a trip to NYC wig shop Hair Shop{: rel=nofollow}—and a few different blonde takes under their belts—the pair opted to go for “a dusty-rose tone and kept the roots darker,” Friedman said, to soften the bold new hue (and continue the celeb-favored rose-gold hair trend). Williams couldn't have been more happy with her new color, either.

“I like it!," Williams told Allure. "Especially this blonde—it feels like it is just a new twist on the same old me. It’s just hair! But it’s fun."

So don't be surprised if (when?) you see Williams living life beyond the pages of Allure as a blonde. "Maybe I’ll become this gorgeous bombshell vixen," she said. "Or maybe I’ll still just be the adult-spelling-bee spirit I’ve always been. I bet people won’t recognize me, and that’s gonna be a fun reveal with my friends.”
