Allergy season is upon us once more

HINTON, WV (WVNS) — It comes around every year without fail…Allergy season.
Allergies are just inflammatory reactions our bodies have to things like pollen, dust mites, and animal dander.

They make us feel miserable with symptoms like runny noses, coughing, and sinus headaches.
Crystal Mitchell, a physician assistant at Summers County ARH Family Care Clinic, said there are medicines that can help alleviate the symptoms.

“Benadryl, Claritin, Zyrtec are safe for most everybody. There’s some newer ones out, like Xyzal, those are pretty effective. Also, Flonase spray is very effective and you can buy that over the counter now, too. And there’s some other prescription medicines that can be helpful,” said Mitchell.

Mitchell says there is no way to prevent allergies and that genetics play a large role in the kind of reactions people will have.

Luckily, she says only about 20% of people suffer from allergies. Mitchell recommends avoiding known irritants as much as possible during the season.
