HBO Max's Love & Death is a story nearly too bizarre to be true, but somehow it's all too real. In 1980, Candace "Candy" Montgomery (Elizabeth Olsen) brutally murdered one of her best friends, Betty Gore (Lily Rabe), after she confronted Montgomery about having an affair with her husband.

Betty's husband, Allan Gore (Jesse Plemons), pursued an affair with Montgomery after she proposed the idea to him. Montgomery, who was at the time married to her own husband Patrick Fugit, had reportedly been considering an affair to spice up her life somehow, according to Texas Monthly.

The Texas housewife decided on Allan Gore after deeming that he "smelled sexy" during a church volleyball game. She quite literally asked Allan, "Would you be interested in having an affair?" in the church parking lot a few weeks later. Eventually, the couples' infidelity led to the death of Betty Gore. Candace Montgomery brutally murdered Betty with an ax, bashing her 41 times.

Here's everything to know about Allan Gore, from how he entered a relationship with Candace Montgomery to where he is now.

Allan was very active in the church community.

According to the Texas Monthly story that is the basis for Love & Death, Montgomery decided to pursue an affair with Allan because of how similar they were. Allan, like Montgomery, was very active in the The Methodist Church of Lucas community (where both the Montgomerys and Gores attended)—and the "personable half of a mismatched couple," per TM.

After deciding he was fit for an affair with her during a church volleyball game, Montgomery began subtly flirting with Alla—and Allan started flirting back. One evening after a church choir practice they both attended, Montgomery point blank asked Allan, "Would you be interested in having an affair?"

According to TM, Allan was surprised and flattered that Montgomery was interested in pursuing a relationship with him, but did not want to hurt his wife. Allan initially turned Candy's proposition down, but eventually called Montgomery and the two began a relationship.

The affair ended several months before Betty was killed.

According to his court testimony, per UPI, Allan ended the affair in 1979 after 10 months of seeing Montgomery. During the time they were seeing each other, the pair would reportedly meet up every two to three weeks at a motel in Plano, Texas, or for lunch.

He later said in court that ending the affair was a "mutual decision," per UPI. The Gores entered Marriage Encounter, a marriage counseling program, following the end of the affair, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Allan traveled a lot for work.

Allan worked for an electronics company in Richardson, Texas, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, which apparently meant he traveled quite a bit (which also caused problems in his marriage with Betty, per TM). On the day Montgomery killed Betty, Allan was on a business trip to Minnesota, per UPI.

Allan testified that Montgomery was among the first he called to search for his wife, who he could not get ahold of on the morning she was killed. Montgomery, who was watching the Gores' daughter Alisa at the time, reportedly claimed she was unaware of Betty's whereabouts.

Allan remarried during the trial of Candace Montgomery.

According to the Dallas Morning News, Allan quickly remarried and moved away from Wylie, Texas. However, his second marriage did not last, and his two daughters, Alisa and Bethany, reportedly fell under the custody of Betty's parents.

Allan may be living in Florida now.

While his account is no longer traceable, The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported that Allan currently lives in Sarasota, Florida with a domestic partner, according to his Facebook profile.
