As stage 2 Tour de France Femmes started to heat up, the weather took a turn for the worst, cooling things down and almost taking out one of the sunniest stars of the peloton.

An early crash in the neutralized zone before the race flag dropped may have been a sign of things to come. Starting in Clermont-Ferrand, riders were greeted by sunshine for the longest route of the 8-day stage race. Weather conditions started to shift on the first categorized climb: Côte du Mont-Dore. Clouds grew heavy and rain followed at around 50 kilometers into the race.

Slick roads and high speeds, a disastrous combination, led to several riders, including Alison Jackson (EF Education-TIBCO-SVB) hitting the tarmac.

“Canadian champion Alison Jackson crashes hard but is quickly back up and smiling,” tweeted NBC Sports Cycling.

A Eurosport announcer explained “When it’s wet like this you can hit some diesel on the road or something like that.”

A smiling and giving-a-thumbs-up Jackson rode back to the peloton.

“Despite going down hard at the back of the peloton, the Paris-Roubaix champion let us know that she’s still going strong,” posted Eurosport on Instagram.

Jackson, 34, known for her TikTok may have taken her own advice from her stage 2 crash at the 2022 Tour of Scandinavia.

“If you crash, check yourself over to make sure your whole body is A-Okay 🤕👌🏼” Jackson posted on Instagram.

At the close of the day, German national champion Liane Lippert (Movistar Team) bested Lotte Kopecky (Team SD Worx) in the sprint but Kopecky retains the yellow jersey.
