Alien: Romulus is looking nasty - in the best possible way.

Those who saw the new footage during Disney’s presentation at CinemaCon described it as “brutal,” “sick,” and “scary.”

In it, we first meet protagonist Rain Carradine (Cailee Spaeny), who’s exploring a mysterious abandoned spaceship with her crew. It’s not going so well for them.

Not only is the room they’re in currently flooded with knee-high water, but it’s got another, more sinister purpose: it’s incubating dozens of alien eggs. These eggs proceed to open, and aggressive facehuggers burst out on the attack. They leap at the crew, and some use their tails to drown people.

Alien: Romulus director Fede Álvarez has said he’s keen to use practical effects wherever possible, and true to his word, the facehuggers are brought to life with puppetry, which makes the action feel weightier and more grounded. The Alien: Romulus timeline was also confirmed by the director.

Just as Rain manages to pry open the doors, we see a horde of facehuggers emerge from the hallway, prompting the survivors to run for the exit. One of the survivors isn’t so lucky, and gets latched onto by a facehugger.

Later in the footage, we see the victim helping pilot a smaller vessel. She complains of chest pains, and uses an x-ray flashlight to find a baby alien inside her ribcage. The alien, a chestburster, lives up to its name by springing straight out of her sternum, all as her crewmates lose control of the ship.

A final montage teases a glimpse of a vicious adult xenomorph, and gives an Alien: Romulus release date of 16 August, 2024.
