A comedian, actress, writer, producer, and director, Ali Wong is a master of many pursuits. Among them is flawlessly wearing epic bold eye makeup with her signature oversized eyeglasses.

Tonight at the Emmys, Wong, who won for Outstanding Actress in a Limited Series or a Movie for her role in Beef, flexed this precise prowess. Playing off the Yves Klein Blue in her custom floral Louis Vuitton gown with a shimmering sequin bodice, Wong wore a set of indigo-blue smoky eyes behind translucent cat-eye frames.

“I went bold and deep with a graphic eye to add a bit more drama than what we’ve been doing this season,” says her makeup artist, Daniel Martin, who looked to Diorshow 5 Couleurs Couture 5 in #279 Denim (the makeup equivalent of a perfect pair of blue jeans) to execute the look.

Before going in with the palette, Martin set the stage with Dior Onstage Crayon in shade #254 Blue. “I used this all over the eyelid, including upper and bottom waterlines, to create an intense shadow base that allows the eyeshadow going on top of it to really pop bright.”

The finishing touch? A swipe of the new Rouge Dior Lipstick in 300 in Nude Style added a “sophisticated touch” to the overall look, says Martin, noting that the new formula is infused with hydrating floral care, “so it would last all night long and keep Ali’s looking feeling and looking hydrated.” Furthering the polish, Wong’s hairstylist, Clayton Hawkins, gave her a set of side-swept Old Hollywood waves using ghd’s Curve Soft Curl iron.

What makes Wong’s eye moment all the more gratifying? It inspires you to take more risks. “Get out of your comfort zone!” encourages Martin. “Blue eyeshadow is gorgeous for those with brown eyes, and experimenting through different applications to see what works best for you is the fun of the journey!”
