Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Nails Her Campaign Lipstick

The congressional candidate picked the perfect red for the campaign trail.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez made history on Tuesday. The 28-year-old unseated 10-term incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley of New York on a Democratic Socialist platform that included Medicare for all, a universal jobs guarantee, and calls to abolish ICE. Ocasio-Cortez says in her own viral campaign ad, "Women like me aren't supposed to run for office," but now, she has the potential to become the youngest sitting member of Congress and the chamber's 39th woman of color out of 535 representative seats. And, like many powerful women before her, she did it all while wearing her perfect shade of lipstick.

As The Cut pointed out, Ocasio-Cortez's incredible bold lip comes courtesy of Stila "Stay All Day" Liquid in Beso, and she name-checked the shade herself on Twitter. "I have been getting many inquiries about my debate lip color in the last two days. I GOT YOU," she wrote in a tweet featuring a photo of her sporting the bold hue in a TV appearance.

The bright red is a subtle callout to Democratic Socialists of America's rose red, and the name is a nod to the population she's been nominated to represent. It also shows that she knows her makeup: The liquid lipstick is beloved for the long-wear formula that's definitely a necessity when you're knocking on doors throughout the Bronx and Queens and shattering political expectations. Until DSA Red becomes its own lipstick shade, this will just have to do.

Ocasio-Cortez has won the Democratic primary in a deeply Democratic district, but will continue on the campaign trail until the general election, in November. She'll be spending some of that time with Cynthia Nixon, who's running her own historic campaign for governor of New York. With these two entering the arena, politics watchers are about to get a beauty lesson.
