Alexander Wang Stars in the 2019 Pirelli Calendar With Gigi Hadid
Here’s the news you were expecting: The 2019 Pirelli Calendar is being shot by Albert Watson and stars a cast including Misty Copeland, Laetitia Casta, and Gigi Hadid. And now the news you weren’t: Alexander Wang takes a star turn in front of the camera in the iconic calendar. “I mean, I would have to be crazy to say no,” Wang exclaims over the phone. “I’ve worked with Albert on our campaign and so he was actually the one that initially asked me. I was really taken aback. It’s such a prestigious project, and and it was such an honor to work on the calendar with Albert and the entire team.”
In the calendar, Wang appears alongside Hadid in a series of photos shot at the Carlyle Hotel in New York. The cinematic shots have a movie-worthy plot: Hadid appears as a sequestered starlet, with Wang as her trusted BFF. What to wear for a day of lounging in New York’s famous hotel? Wang’s uniform of a black hoodie, trousers, and sneakers, naturally. “He said he wanted me to just look by me—luckily that didn’t require that much,” the designer laughed.
As for his modeling gig, Wang is quick to note that while he has a cabal of supermodels on hand in his Wang Squad, he didn’t solicit any posing tips. Instead, he trusted the lensmen to guide him. “The great thing about working with Albert is that he’s calm and he knows exactly what he wants,” he says. “He kind of gives you very clear directions, it’s almost meditative. I can’t explain it, you kind of just fall into the picture, so it was very pleasant and easy working with him.”
The final images of Wang and Hadid will be released this fall, along with the entire calendar. Until then, we expect Wang will be keeping his modeling turns limited to his infamous sprinting bows.
