Alexander Wang Didn’t Have a NYFW Show—This Is What He Did Instead
Alexander Wang NYFW Photo Diary
Alexander Wang might not have had a show during Fall 2019 New York Fashion Week, but he was very much present. Between a party at his Soho store and another at the Rainbow Room, the Wang spirit was almost unmissable—and the hangovers in the front rows were a testament to that. (Anyone who stayed up late enough to watch Wang pull A$AP Ferg onstage will attest to the morning-after blues.)
The designer used the gathering of fashion folks in New York to celebrate his Asian heritage. It’s something he’s renewed the focus on in his namesake brand, using Chinese symbols in his “Collection 1” shown in June, and riffing on the idea of the hustle that gets you to the American dream in his “Collection 2” show in December, and is continuing to promote in his off-the-runway events too. With the Lunar New Year on February 5, Wang had the ample opportunity to mark the festivities.
First up was a gathering at his Grand Street store with snacks by Mission Chinese. Then came the unveiling of his signature burger at Freds at Barneys made with Chinese five spice short rib tossed with fresh scallions. Finally, Wang finished off the week with an all-night party at the Rainbow Room that might have taken a while to enter—wait time in the line averaged one hour—but was worth it once Tommy Genesis, City Girls, Trina, and A$AP Ferg performed. Here, the designer recounts his NYFW in his own photos.
