The celebrity gossip-hungry world was waiting with bated breath to see which members of Alexander Wang’s buzzy #WangSquad would show up to his spring 2017 show (the answer: nearly all of them) — but the night’s real surprise was on the runway, not the sidelines.
As squaders Kylie Jenner, her rapper, car-purchasing boyfriend Tyga, Nicki Minaj, Zoe Kravitz, Madonna, and singer-actress Tinashe looked on from the front row, Wang presented his loungewear-inspired new season looks, followed immediately by a finale featuring his long-rumored collaboration with German sportswear brand Adidas. The all-black collection included tees, crop tops, pants, jackets, a patent trench, and more for both men and women — all with Adidas’s recognizable trefoil logo turned upside-down. This is Wang’s first high-profile collab since his sporty, muted grayscale collection for H&M launched in November 2014 — and it’ll no doubt be a sellout.
The debut of Wang x Adidas didn’t come as much of a shock to those who were actually in attendance of the 50 minute-delayed show: The Fashion Law reported several hours prior that the venue was decorated with signage declaring “adidas Originals x AW.” Still, it was unclear how, exactly, the pieces would appear. (I, for one, was confused by the fringed moccasins worn by the models during the main presentation. Were those Adidas?! Erm… no.)
But no matter how hot Wang’s new sportswear endeavor proves itself to be, it seems unlikely that we’ll be seeing Kylie Jenner wearing it — publicly, anyway. Despite the fact that she’s starring in the designer’s fall campaign — and that her sister, Kendall, walked in Saturday’s show — she’s currently under contract with Adidas competitor, Puma.
