Alexander Wang Brings Back the Banana Clip at New York Fashion Week!

If Alexander Wang has become synonymous with a kind of undone downtown beauty, tonight’s Fall 2018 show, held in the sleek hallways of 4 Times Square (Vogue’s former longtime home), presented a radical departure. Out went the louche slept-in lengths and off-kilter fringe worn by his nocturnal party-girls of seasons past, and in came a “powerful” look better suited to the 9-5 corporate venue.

“The hair’s a take on ‘80s executive,” said coiffeur Guido Palau, as he raked Kaia Gerber’s hair back into a taut twist with Redken’s Mess Around paste, letting out a few loose ends. “It’s a super dramatic silhouette.” Dramatic, indeed: The updo was secured with a palm-size, gleaming silver banana clip that was created in-house by Wang’s team for the occasion and stamped with his name.

“It’s a cool way to put your hair up and not feel too lady,” Palau said of the throwback accessory, which will be sold in stores come fall. “I love the way things that were considered a bit off can be rejigged again—like the mullet,” he added with a laugh, referencing the polarizing style that appeared on Wang’s Fall 2017 runway.

In other words, if this designer's track record for moving the beauty needle is any indication, the banana clip is back—and it’s officially better than ever. Let the waitlist begin.
