AppleTV+ has announced that it has acquired the series developed by Paramount Television Studios based on Martha Wells' bestselling book series The Murderbot Diaries.

The Academy Award-nominated Chris and Paul Weitz will write, direct and produce the sci-fi drama series centered on a self-hacking security android who is horrified by human emotion yet drawn to its vulnerable "clients."

Emmy-winner Alexander Skarsgård joins the team, serving as an executive producer and also starring.

The story follows Murderbot as it must hide its free will and complete a dangerous assignment when all it really wants is to be left alone to watch futuristic soap operas and figure out its place in the universe.

David S. Goyer executive produces alongside Keith Levine for Phantom Four. The Murderbot Diaries will be the second collaboration between Apple TV+ and Goyer, who served as showrunner and executive producer on Foundation.

The first novella in the series, All Systems Red, won the Hugo and Nebula Award in 2018, as did the fifth novel, Network Effect, in 2021.
