Aldi Is Expanding to Locations It’s Never Been Before

As food obsessives, we can get excited about some pretty niche topics. Sure, a product release or a fan-favorite return can get everyone a little jazzed, but only the true foodies really care about where their favorite grocery store is popping up next. And we are those foodies.

It’s no secret that Aldi is one of the fastest-growing grocery stores in the U.S., and if you’ve ever stepped foot inside the German grocer, you can probably understand why it’s so popular. Aldi has a no-frills method to its stores that saves its customers time and money—plus, the products are on par (or maybe even better) than the name-brand counterparts from other stores.

It’s why nearly a quarter of the population shops at Aldi stores. And Aldi wants that number, which is already at an all-time high, to continue to grow—which is why it just announced a massive expansion plan.

Aldi Is Opening 800 New Stores

Aldi plans to open 800 stores by 2029. While the five-year expansion is planned nationwide, Aldi has an extra focus on growing its presence in the Northeast and Midwest by opening 330 new stores, plus Southern California and Phoenix. It will also open its first-ever store in Las Vegas.

“Our growth is fueled by our customers, and they are asking for more Aldi stores in their neighborhoods nationwide,” said Jason Hart, CEO, Aldi. “With up to 40% savings on groceries, new customers are inspired to try us out, and existing customers keep coming back. With this commitment to add 800 stores in the next five years, we’ll be where our shoppers need us while positively impacting the communities we serve.”

In 2023, Aldi committed to opening 120 new locations across the nation—including in new cities New Orleans and Baton Rouge. By the end of the year, Aldi had opened more than 130 locations. So, it seems like 800 stores in five years shouldn't be a problem.

Especially because, as you might also recall, Aldi acquired Southeastern Grocers, who originally owned Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores, in 2023. That deal is officially complete, which means Aldi owns about 400 stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and Mississippi. While Aldi is committed to keeping many Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores as-is, it also says the acquisition will play a key part in its expansion plan for the Southeast.

By 2025, the company says about 50 Southeastern Grocerers stores will be converted to Aldi locations—and we’d guess that’s only the beginning for this merger.

Aldi hasn’t announced which Southeastern Grocers stores will be converted, nor has it given concrete locations for the other 750 stores. No matter where the stores are, though, it just means 800 more chances for customers to experience the Aisle of Shame and Aldi's fan-favorite items.
