Over the years, Alana Blanchard’s surf career has taken many forms.

From competitor to social media influencer to surf mom, it’s the latter that consumes most of her time these days. She and her partner, pro surfer Jack Freestone, have two young children who tag along with them on surf trips around the globe.

But motherhood has taken its toll on Alana, as discussed in her most recent vlog:

“I wanted to talk to you guys real fast, because a few of you guys had noticed that I was kinda like, I don’t know, a little bit low, a little bit bummed out in my last vlog,” Alana says.

“There’s a big reason why, and I felt like sharing it with you guys. I’m definitely on a journey right now to heal myself. I’ve had hypothyroidism for a while now. Since having Koda, it’s gotten really thrown off.

“Since having Koda, everything has been thrown off. I had hair loss that lasted almost a year. My hair isn’t thinning anymore, and I still have hair, so I’m thankful for that. Once I figured out it was messed up, I was like, ‘no wonder why I’m not feeling that great after having a baby.’ Because after I had Banks, I felt amazing. I loved how I felt postpartum, I loved how I looked, I felt amazing.

“But after I had Koda, this time around has been so different. I’ve felt slow and sluggish and I have no metabolism – those are symptoms of hypothyroidism.”

Despite the health issues, Alana’s still surfing (and shredding) as shown in the vlog. Her and Jack moved to Australia, and they’ve been camping out in Byron Bay – by the looks of it, they’ve had fun waves and fun adventures with whales and dolphins.

Here’s to a speedy recovery for Alana.
