  • After his live segment ended this morning, Roker shared a behind-the-scenes clip of his at-home setup to Instagram.

After being exposed to a 3rd hour of Today crew member who tested positive for COVID-19, beginning March 17, Today meteorologist Al Roker will be delivering the weather from self-isolation for 15 days. More specifically, he’s doing it from the comfort of his kitchen while wearing wonderfully stretchy pants.

You might wonder how a meteorologist could have the setup necessary to work from home, given that there are usually fancy green screens and cameras involved. But the Today tech team made it happen for Al. With a pair of Airpods, his iPad propped against a water bottle, and a laptop, he’s able to do his job just fine. And he gets to sleep in.

“I didn’t have to commute in, so I did sleep in,” Al said during his first at-home forecast. “We’ve kind of jury-rigged this system, so I’ve got all I need.” Because his lower half wasn’t in the camera angle, Savannah Guthrie jokingly had to make sure he wasn’t delivering the news pantsless.

“Knowing you, are you wearing pants right now?” she asked with a laugh. Al responded, jokingly. “Uhhh. Oh, look at the time!” he said, leaving the frame. He quickly returned, yelling, “Yes! I’m wearing pants for God’s sakes! But they’re stretchy pants.”

Hoda Kotb chimed in. “We figured they were sweats,” she said.

After his live segment ended, he shared a behind-the-scenes clip of his at-home setup to Instagram. “This is my #studiokitchen so I stay away from folks being cautious after brief contact with a @todayshow staffer,” he wrote. “No @nbcnews staff are with me.”

Al announced his new remote routine to his Instagram followers the night before he went live from home for the first time. “Our crack #techsupport team at @nbcnews #fieldtransmission has my tech outfitted so I will be broadcasting from the Roker/Roberts #kitchen tomorrow am on @todayshow and @3rdhourtoday,” he captioned a video.

In the clip, he explained that although he’s practicing social distancing to protect himself and others, he doesn’t really like the term. “I hate to use social distancing, I think physical distancing,” he said. “I think socially, we want to connect more than ever.” He went on to thank everyone who is working to protect from and contain the spread of COVID-19. “Our thoughts and prayers are with all the first responders, all the health care professionals who are putting it on the line, taking care of folks who have the coronavirus,” he added. “And of course all those affected personally, we say our thoughts and prayers are with you as well.”
