The AJC Decatur Book Festival Is Georgia’s Labor Day Weekend Literary Destination
If you find yourself in and around Atlanta on Labor Day weekend, don’t miss the fun happening in downtown Decatur. Each year, summer's last long weekend brings readers, writers, and book lovers from across the country together to celebrate at the AJC Decatur Book Festival.
The festival got its start in 2006 and regularly draws tens of thousands of visitors of all ages to Decatur for a giant celebration of the written word. The event is free and open to the public, and it presents a packed weekend of book talks, signings, readings, and special events. There’s something for everyone on the schedule, and there’s a big lineup of events for kids and young adults too. Looking to buy a book (or two or three)? Come prepared to browse. On Saturday and Sunday, a street fair takes shape on Ponce de Leon and Clairmont Avenues, which are lined with tents representing local independent bookstores, small businesses, nonprofits, and other organizations.
The lineup of writers and poets for this year’s festival is an exciting one and includes Kelly Barnhill, Sarah M. Broom, Jericho Brown, Casey Cep, Ingrid Rojas Contreras, Fiona Davis, Nicole Dennis-Benn, Philippa Gregory, Jasmine Guillory, Patti Callahan Henry, Joshilyn Jackson, Mira Jacob, Mary Norris, Téa Obreht, Mary Laura Philpott, Rion Amilcar Scott, Laurel Snyder, and Ocean Vuong, among so many others. The keynote session kicks off on August 30 with a discussion on Latinx writing, immigration, and the power of literature presented in partnership with PEN America.
The AJC Decatur Book Festival will take place August 29-September 1, 2019, in downtown Decatur, Georgia.
