Airline Passenger Who Says Person in Middle Seat Reached Over Them to Close Shade Recounts Petty Revenge

"She never asked me, she just reached directly in front of me to close the shade," wrote the traveler on Reddit

An airline passenger detailed every step of their handling of a fellow traveler who they felt violated their personal space in a hilarious post on Reddit.

The passenger, who goes by jonvox on the platform, wrote on the subreddit r/pettyrevenge that the incident occurred during a "noon domestic short haul flight."

"I was flying in the window seat because I like looking out the window," the passenger explained. "The woman sitting next to me reached in front of me multiple times to close the window shade. She never asked me, she just reached directly in front of me to close the shade."

The Reddit user said that after "immediately" reopening the window multiple times, the woman would always reach over to close it again.

Noting that there was "no reason to need darkness in the middle of the day," the passenger ensured the woman knew they were bothered after they said they felt they were not being treated "like a human."

"I pulled out my book and turned on the reading light, despite there being ample natural light from the open window for me to read," the passenger explained. "I then positioned my hands so that my watch would reflect the reading light" across the offending flier's face.

The passenger read the book for an hour, jiggling their hand the entire time "so it would shine the light back and forth," they even admitted it was intended to "be super distracting and annoying."

After landing, the passenger gave the woman a piece of their mind as they said, "Next time you fly, book a window seat if you want to control the window. Or at least treat me like a human and ask me before you violate my personal space. What you did is unbelievably rude."

The middle seat passenger looked "so offended," the poster recounted.

Thankfully things didn't escalate beyond a scoff in this case, but what should a traveler do in a similar situation to handle a pushy fellow passenger civilly?

PEOPLE previously spoke with travel advisor Nicole Campoy Jackson of Fora Travel, who emphasized that alerting a flight attendant is the best option to help in any situation where two passengers can't see eye to eye.

“If you're arguing over whether you can have it open for the next 20 minutes before the initial descent, for example, that would be helpful to know," Jackson said. "If you're arguing over something like keeping it closed mid-flight to rest while someone else wants it open for photos, it can just help to have a trained, third-party person to negotiate and keep everyone happy.”
