Ahead of national championship, LSU cancels classes for 2 days
With the college football world descending on the state of Louisiana for the College Football Playoff title game, the folks over at LSU realized there probably wasn’t going to be much learning taking place on campus in Baton Rouge early next week.
On Friday, days before LSU will face Clemson for the national championship at the Superdome in New Orleans, the school announced that it has canceled classes on both Monday and Tuesday.
“The LSU Board of Supervisors voted [Friday] to cancel classes at the flagship campus in Baton Rouge on Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 13-14, to accommodate students who are traveling to New Orleans for the national championship game,” the university said in a statement.
With so many folks making the short drive to New Orleans for Monday night’s game, canceling classes makes sense. It makes sense for Tuesday, too. If LSU wins, the celebration will certainly carry over into the next day. And if LSU loses, well, it’s a safe bet to think those mostly hungover students won’t be in the mood to sit through a lecture.
According to The Advocate, a proposal to cancel classes on Monday and Tuesday was introduced on Friday in a university Board of Supervisors committee meeting. The proposal was voted on and subsequently passed later Friday. Earlier this week, the school said it would not adjust its academic calendar before ultimately changing course Friday.
Monday was actually slated to be the first day of the spring semester at LSU, so the decision pushes back the start of the semester on the Baton Rouge campus back by two days. Although classes are canceled, the university will remain open both days and classes on other LSU campuses across the state will take place as scheduled.
“The University Registrar is currently working to update the university’s academic calendar, as the cancellation will likely require scheduling make-up days,” the university said.
