Adria Arjona Swears By Using Hairspray on Her Brows

Five minutes in on a call with Adria Arjona, and it's clear she's a free spirit. We talk about how she believes everything happens for a reason and how, whether it's good and bad, those experiences shape who you are as person. It's no wonder then that Armani Beauty tapped the actor—who you probably recognize as Jules from Pacific Rim: Uprising and Emily from the second season of True Detective—as the face of its new fragrance, My Way.

The ethos behind the perfume and its new campaign is “I am what I live,” a call to soak up the best of what life has to offer—and a mantra that undoubtedly carries new weight as our lives continue to shift with the ongoing precautions surrounding COVID-19

In fact, that message is what drew the rising star to the campaign in the first place. “It resonates a lot with me," says Arjona. "I love the idea of opening your horizons and paving your own journey. No path is the same.”

I'll admit, it all sounded a bit woo-woo, but one spritz of this scent and I got it. Its bright, flowery mix of vanilla and tuberose is happy, inviting, and vivacious—everything Arjona represents. But here I'll let her tell you more. Ahead, she answers all of Glamour's Big Beauty Questions, including her beauty must-haves, the women inspiring her right now, and the hair advice she swears by.

What’s one beauty rule you swear by?

Moisturize! You can never moisturize enough. I love the Armani Crema Nera Extrema Supreme Reviving Light Cream. It’s pretty dry here in L.A. and I’ve been in the sun a lot. I feel like that’s the one product my skin just soaks right in. I use it both during the day and at night.

How has your upbringing inspired your beauty routine?

All my travels inspire me, but the natural colors and textiles that are used in Mexico and Guatemala specifically are so bright and so beautiful. They use the most beautiful natural reds. I think one of my favorite looks is a bare face and red lip, especially for summer—a nice bright red or orange.

You’re stranded on a desert island. What three products do you bring with you?

Moisturizer, a brow pencil, and chapstick. I'm addicted. Armani has a really good one called the Ecstasy Balm. I’ve already gone through two of them.

Your brows are stunning. What tips do you have for the perfect brush-up?

I use a pencil and brush them with hairspray so they really stay up there. Hair gel works too because sometimes hairspray can be a bit much. But, you know, it's hair. So I'm like, I can use what I use on my head on my eyebrows, right?

Walk us through your skin-care routine.

I use the Emma Hardie Moringa Cleansing Balm. I love an oil-based cleanser. I feel like it doesn’t dry my face. It helps moisturize but still melts all my makeup off. I put sunscreen on every single day, and I reapply throughout the day because it's important. Vintner's Daughter is another brand I really love, and Armani Crema Nera. Those three are my signatures. I take them everywhere.

Do you have a favorite nail color or design you gravitate toward?

Very natural and nude. I always go classic just because I never know where I’m going—like, if I'm going to a meeting, I like to go super natural. I do want to try yellow, though.

What about hair products? What do you style with on your natural hair days?

Because my hair is so wild and so crazy, the only thing that really tames it is coconut oil. It smells delicious, and it makes my curls bouncy. I don’t put a lot on, because then it looks like I haven’t showered in months, but I do put a little bit on my ends and midlength, then I leave the top part to just do whatever it’s doing that day. But I also like letting my hair be a little wild and free.

Facial or massage?

Massage! I'm so picky when it comes to facials—I need to know what products you are using on my skin and where are they coming from. So I think, with my body, I’m a little more relaxed about it and also it just reenergizes you. When I get a facial, I'm like, Ah, I wish she would’ve touched my shoulders!

Screw, marry, kill: Mascara, lipstick, highlighter.

Kill highlighter for sure, marry lipstick, and screw mascara.

If you could change one thing about beauty perceptions, what would it be?

The perception of perfection really, really rubs me the wrong way just because it's nonexistent. I think a lot of people don’t realize, or may realize but don’t understand, that we have super-talented makeup artists, hairstylists, and stylists that put us all together and make us look perfect for that one picture. And that picture we post was picked out of a hundred. Or it was edited.

What women are inspiring you most right now?

AOC for sure. She is such a powerful and intelligent woman, and she happens to be beautiful. She’s who I look up to right now in terms of a powerful woman who isn’t afraid to say what she wants to say. I also love Ashley Graham. She inspires me to say what’s on my mind and not care what people think about it. She's funny, smart, and I love the way she shares with absolute honesty about what motherhood actually is.

Finally, what’s the best beauty advice your mom ever gave you?

I think just to be true to myself, you know? My mom loves these really funky colors and sometimes I'm like, “Mom, you’re wearing green on your eyes, what are you doing?” And she’s like, “That’s me, that’s what I felt like using.” She's taught me that if something resonates with you, it’s important to go with that initial gut and not necessarily what’s on trend at the moment.
