This Adorable Penguin Got To Tour His Aquarium After It Closed To Humans

Penguins at Shedd Aquarium in Chicago got to experience life on the other side of the glass over the weekend. The aquarium recently shut down to human visitors to help stop the spread of coronavirus, so the staff decided to let some of the penguins out of their habitat to wander the space and meet their fellow aquarium residents.

Shedd Aquarium tweeted a video of one penguin, a rockhopper named Wellington, taking a particular liking to the Amazonian fish exhibit.

"Some of the penguins went on a field trip to meet other animals at Shedd," the tweet said. "Wellington seemed most interested in the fishes in Amazon Rising! The black-barred silver dollars also seemed interested in their unusual visitor."

Although they've had to shut down their operations as usual, a representative for Shedd Aquarium told The Chicago Tribune that they're taking the situation as a new opportunity to get creative with their animals' downtime.

“Without guests in the building, caretakers are getting creative in how they provide enrichment to animals,” a representative for the aquarium said. “Introducing new experiences, activities, foods and more to keep them active, encourage them to explore, problem-solve and express natural behaviors.”

The aquarium's video received plenty of love online, with many Twitter users asking for an even longer version so that they could see the penguin's full day around the space. Others said they were happy to be seeing something joyful come out of what has been a nerve-racking situation.
