He’s sitting there on the chair munching away on jackfruit, looking so well behaved. He must know to sit still to get his treat.

As he’s sitting there eating, he’s getting snack crumbs all over his stomach and legs. That is a total mood! We imagine that we look the same snacking in bed late at night.

Fun Facts About Marmots

Closely related to prairie dogs, marmots are a species of rodent native to North America. You can usually find them out west in the mountains in areas higher than 7,000 feet.

Marmots are herbivores who eat plants, seeds, and grass. They spend most of their day foraging for food and keeping a lookout for predators like coyotes. Marmots have a special little whistling noise that they make in order to alert their family members of a predator.

Marmots build extensive dens and burrow systems with multiple entrances and tunnels. The dens are used for shelter, hibernation, and breeding. Burrows built for hibernation can go up to 23 feet below ground!

Marmots live in what is known as a harem, a group of one male and two to three females. They share close familial relationships with one another and generally also live in a big group colony made up of several harems.

Marmots are short-sighted, meaning that their vision isn’t the best. That’s why they live in large groups: To keep one another safe from predators that others in the group may not see. In the wild, these animals generally can live up to 15 years, which is a lot longer than we expected!

These cute critters frequent the rocky terrains of Montana and Yellowstone National Park. If you visit those areas, you’re likely to see some wandering around for food.

There are 14 marmot species across the world, including in Asia. But one very famous marmot lives in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania: Phil the “groundhog.” Every year in February, Phil predicts when the end of winter will be. He wakes up after seven months of hibernation to see whether or not he sees his shadow.
