Addressing his past, DJ Mister Cee says he is 'Try-sexual'

A decade after Hot 97’s DJ Mister Cee was made into tabloid fodder for being arrested after being caught reportedly soliciting sex from a transgender woman, he’s now receiving support after announcing he's “Try-Sexual” — which he says means he’s willing to “try anything.”

On March 11 the New York based DJ appeared on retired-rapper Maino’s Kitchen Talk podcast. Some of the footage was shared on Instagram by OnSite, including a clip in which he acknowledges that his dating history with trans women is “well-documented.”

Another host on the show, an artist that goes by Miss Georgie, then asked Cee, as did Maino, if he considers himself to be gay — an ill-informed question, as being attracted to a trans woman, or any woman, would not make Cee gay. According to GLAAD, sexual orientation "describes a person's enduring physical, romantic, and/or emotional attraction to another person. Gender identity and sexual orientation are not the same. Transgender people may be straight, lesbian, gay, bisexual, or queer. For example, a person who transitions from male to female and is attracted solely to men would typically identify as a straight woman."

In any event, it’s a question Cee says he was asked — and which he answered — back in 2011. “I am not gay,” he had told Hot 97 program director Ebro Darden at the time. He had also told GQ that being outed by the media had made him feel like “an actual dead person,” explaining that, “In his mind, a whole funeral scene unfolded: who came and didn’t come, who was mourning, who was laughing from the back of the pews.”

But now, a more confident Cee is calling himself “try-sexual” and, when asked directly by Maino if he is attracted to trans women, shouted an unapologetic, “Yes!”

On Twitter, supporters are praising his honesty and unwillingness to be shamed.

In the interview, as Maino continued to interrogate Cee about his past, Cee stopped to correct the language used by Maino — who wrongly refers to trans women as “dudes.”

Although Cee was met with some homophobic and transphobic criticisms, many people flocked to the comments to congratulate him on finally living his truth.

One user wrote, “Gotta respect him. He likes what he likes,” while another agreed, writing, “Please don’t dog this black [man] for stating what makes him feel good. If he like it I love it. Speak yo truth sir.”

Cee, who is also known as “The Finisher,” is most known for assisting the careers of artists including The Notorious B.I.G., Jay-Z, and Big Daddy Kane. He now has another reason to be regarded as revolutionary — for loving trans women out loud.
