But if your idea of the perfect vacation involves a mix of charm and history, then consider visiting one of the most beautiful covered bridges in the U.S. While there were once thousands of covered bridges across the country, there are only 500 to 600 remaining today. Hogback Covered Bridge: Madison County, Iowa

You've heard of the famous romance novel and film The Bridges of Madison County. Well, here's one of the most famous ones! This historic bridge is one of six remaining out of the county's original 19. Built in 1884 and rehabilitated in 1992, it features a lattice truss design and is painted a beautiful, vibrant shade of red.

This one was built much more recently than the others on our list, in 1972, but it was constructed using traditional methods and materials: The town lattice truss structure was even pulled into place by oxen!

Built in 1934, the Horton Mill Covered Bridge towers 70 feet above the Calvert Prong of Little Warrior River. In fact, it's known for being the highest covered bridge above a U.S. waterway! It's one of three covered bridges in Blount County, which has been dubbed the "Covered Bridge Capital of Alabama."

This historic bridge has the longest clear span of any covered bridge in the nation. Built in 1862, Bridgeport Covered Bridge reopened to pedestrians in November 2021 after a decade-long restoration project.

Humpback Covered Bridge: Alleghany County, Virginia

Humpback Bridge spans across Dunlap Creek and is Virginia's oldest remaining covered bridge, as well as the only covered, humpback bridge remaining in the United States. Part of a five-acre wayside park, this spot is a favorite of locals.

Built in 1825 on the then-private property of country mansion Hyde Hall, both historical sites are now a part of Glimmerglass State Park, which also boasts a popular beach and miles of great trails.
