Adam Driver's new movie sees him singing during an oral sex scene. Yep, really.

The Star Wars actor's next film Annette, which has just premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, sees him play a stand-up comedian whose life is changed when he and his opera singer wife (Marion Cotillard) welcome a baby.

The comedy drama musical includes one particularly extreme scene, with Cotillard opening up about singing in some unusual situations on set.

"On most classic musicals, you record your songs in advance and then you do playback on the set," she said. "But there, [director] Leos [Carax] wanted everything to be completely live.

"It added to the complexity of the set: we found ourselves singing in very complicated positions, doing back-crawling or mimicking cunnilingus; acrobatic positions that technically modify your song [the way you sing].

"But that was the effect Leos was looking for: he wanted the voices modified, thwarted, by the real [situation]."

Annette has certainly got critics at Cannes talking.

David Ehrlich tweeted: "Leos Carax made a Sparks musical about how self-loathing men can't accept love and Adam Driver sings into Marion Cotillard's vagina (twice!) and then she gives birth to a marionette baby and I was just deeply bored by every dour, self-amused, batshit second of it."

Robbie Collin added: "When I say I can't believe what happens in Annette I mean I literally had to keep checking my notebook while writing the review to make sure I hadn't imagined it. On the best and maddest Cannes opener in a million years."

Meanwhile, Iana Murray said: "I thought adam driver doing bo burnham-style stand up and having a horrifying robot baby with marion cotillard was weird but ANNETTE just kept outdoing itself. a true shitpost of a movie. don't know if i like it yet but i respect the audacity."

Certainly sounds... intriguing.
