Actress Barbie Ferreira opens up about leaving 'Euphoria': 'I want to be able to not be the fat best friend'

Actress and model Barbie Ferreira is perhaps best known for her role as Kat Hernandez on HBO’s Euphoria. But after leaving the hit series after the second season, just as it was gaining momentum, many fans were left wondering what exactly caused her exit.
During a recent interview with Dax Shepard on his podcast Armchair Expert, Ferreira finally addressed the questions — and the rumors — that have been swirling around her departure for the past year. Namely, suggesting Ferreira’s exit had a lot to do with her alleged tension with the show’s creator, Sam Levinson.
“When people ask me about season two, they come at me like I was some sort of victim,” Ferreira told Shepard. “I’m always, like, ‘No, it’s okay, promise. It’s good.'”
As for her rumored falling out with Levinson, Ferreira was quick to shoot that down.
“I kind of got sucked into this drama that I never asked to be in and that I’ve never talked about,” she shared. “Don’t believe everything you read.”
The real reason, Ferreira clarified, was that she truly didn’t see a real future for her character — at least, not in a way that felt right for the series.
“I don’t think there was a place for her to go,” the actress shared. “I think there were places she could have gone. I just don’t think it would have fit into the show.”
Ultimately, Ferreira said her departure was a “mutual decision” but did add that at that point, she wanted “to be able to not be the fat best friend.”
“I don’t want to play that,” she said. “And I think they didn’t want that either.”
Looking back, the actress also wondered if she even should have stuck around for as long as she did, saying that “maybe I overstayed my welcome a little bit.”
But whether or not that’s true, she seemed pretty clear on one thing: She and Levinson weren’t at odds with each other during her last season. If anything, she feels they were very much on the same page about things.
“Sam writes for things that he relates to,” Ferreira shared. “I don’t think he relates to Kat. I like Kat, so I get to go on my own path.”
