Julian Sands, who went missing while hiking in Southern California this past January, has been confirmed deceased. He was 65.

He was last seen hiking Mt. Baldy, outside of Los Angeles, shortly after the new year. On Jan. 13, when his family failed to get in touch with him, he was reported missing. While search and rescue efforts began immediately, inclement weather and large quantities of snow and ice on the mountainous terrain made it difficult.

As months went on, officials continued to orchestrate coordinated searches, but it was civilian hikers who happened upon his remains in the early hours of June 24, in the Mt. Baldy Wilderness Area.

At the time, it was unclear what the condition of the remains or their location was. The San Bernardino County Sheriff's office revealed later that night that the remains had been transported to the coroner's office for identification. Officials went on to update the press release after his identity was confirmed earlier today, June 27.

According to the report, investigators are still working to determine Sands' cause of death.

The actor, who moved from England to North Hollywood when his career kicked off, is best known for roles in several '80s classics, including A Room With a View, Arachnophobia, Leaving Las Vegas, and Warlock.

Fans were devastated by the news, taking to Twitter to recall some of their favorite works from the late actor and to send their love to his family.

"May you now rest in peace Julian Sands. Thank you for your gifts across the big screen where you delighted, frightened, and made us laugh with your roles. My sincerest condolences to all his acquittances and family members," one wrote.

"Incredibly sad. Julian Sands was such a talented actor - he could make you laugh, cry and swoon - sometimes all in the same movie. I hope there is some comfort in knowing that he died doing what we loved, hiking, but I'm sure his family is in bits," said another.

"RIP Julian Sands officially. It’s been a rough search but I’m sure his family is thankful for the closure. What a talent and unfortunate end to an artist with a great body of work," a third tweeted.

Sands is survived by his wife, Evgenia Citkowitz, and his three children: Henry, 38, whom he shared with his first wife, Sarah Sands, and Natalya, 26, and Imogen, 23.

Prior to the discovery, Sands' family issued a statement thanking "the search teams and coordinators who have worked tirelessly to find Julian.”

“We continue to hold Julian in our hearts," the statement continued, "with bright memories of him as a wonderful father, husband, explorer, lover of the natural world and the arts, and as an original and collaborative performer.”
