Adan Canto, the Tejano actor known for a wide variety of roles over the past decade, has died at the age of 42. The actor privately battled appendiceal cancer.

Canto rose to prominence in the U.S. after working as a musician in his native Mexico. In the past decade, he was introduced to American audiences with roles in movies like X-Men: Days of Future Past and TV shows like NarcosDesignated Survivor, and The Cleaning Lady.

He got his big break in Hollywood after being scouted for the Fox series The Following in 2013. Over the next several years, he displayed his versatility on-screen and ability to take on whatever character was thrown his way, from Colombian politician Rodrigo Lara Bonilla on Narcos and Vice President-elect Aaron Shore on Designated Survivor. His big screen debut in the U.S. was in 2014's X-Men: Days of Future Past, where he played Sunspot, and in recent years, he starred opposite Jacob Elordi in 2 Hearts and Halle Berry in her directorial debut Bruised.

Canto's health in recent months prevented him from filming season 3 of The Cleaning Lady, though he planned to return to set later this year. He's survived by his wife Stephanie Ann Canto and their two young children Roman Alder and Eve Josephine.

"Adan had a depth of spirit that few truly knew. Those who glimpsed it were changed forever," his reps at UTA, Entertainment360 and Viewpoint said of his passing, per Deadline. "He will be greatly missed by so many."
