When Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse came out in 2018, it felt like a reinvention of the superhero story. Stunning animation, strong voice acting, and a stellar storyline made the movie one of the biggest Marvel releases outside of the main MCU franchise. In November 2018, it was no surprise when Variety announced the film would have both a sequel and a spin-off. While the television spin-off is still in development, the film's sequel has already been released.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is now out in theaters. Early reactions seem to suggest a different tone than the first film, but still the overall reviews are positive. Brian Davids from The Hollywood Reporter tweeted the film was "darker and sadder than I expected, but necessary." And Rotten Tomatoes writer Tessa Smith tweeted the film "raises its own bar which seemed impossible."
For anyone who needs a refresher, the film takes place a year after the events of Into the Spider-Verse. Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) once again needs to traverse the multiverse to help Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) defeat supervillain the Spot (played by Jason Schwartzman). They also encounter the head of the Spider Society, led by Miguel O'Hara (Oscar Isaac).
Now two movies into this new adaptation of Spider-Man, viewers are probably wondering what's next for Miles. Will there be another Spider-Verse film? Or is the television spin-off the last we'll see of the characters we've grown to love on screen? Here's what we know.
Will there be a sequel to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse?
Yes. According to the writer-producers, a third film is already in the works and it's called Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, writer-producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller said back in 2021 they had too many ideas for just one movie. So Across the Spider-Verse is part one in an "epic."
"We wrote what we thought the story needed to be, and to our surprise we realized it was two movies instead of one. We're working on them both as we speak," they said.
Will there be even more Spider-Men and Spider-People in Beyond the Spider-Verse?
Yes! In an interview with Collider, Lord and Miller announced more characters would appear in the third film. “You thought that you've seen every Spider-Person that you could imagine, but not every Spider-Person we can imagine,” says Lord.
That said, we don't know who will be in the next film besides Miles, so we'll have to wait and see what Lord and Miller cook up next.
When is the Beyond the Spider-Verse coming out?
Beyond the Spider-Verse is slated for release on March 29, 2024. That means there's less than a year before the (assumed) final saga for this iteration of Miles Morales. Until then, we can enjoy the two movies we've got, and hope the television spin-off comes out soon so we won't have to live for too long without Miles and his multiverse world too long.
