From Town & Country

Though the 2021 Inauguration was a great day for democracy, it was also a great day for fashion. Representing American designers of different genders and races, the Presidential families all stepped out of the Capitol building in head-to-toe color.

Vice President Kamala Harris selected a purple ensemble by Black designers Sergio Hudson and Christopher John Rogers. Purple, a mix of red and blue, represents the emphasis on unity as the country moves forward.

Dr. Jill Biden wore a stunning outfit in blue, with a mask to match, by New York designer Markarian. If this is her debut look, we can't wait to see what the next four years will bring.

And fashion heavy-hitter Michelle Obama did not disappoint in a burgundy look, also by Sergio Hudson.

As for the Biden grandchildren, what a "wow moment. Stepping out in white, pink, and camel, the young women looked like visions of a bygone era, dare we say Jackie O. vibes?

Luckily anyone can create a version of a monochromatic look. It is surprisingly easy, if daring. Just spin the color wheel and go for it!

Dr. Jill Biden went for all-blue as she stood beside her husband as he was sworn into office. Blue, the color of the Democratic Party, is also associated with tranquility and inspiration. Our First Lady’s choice is super flexible as blue comes in a range of shades ideal for layering the perfect monochrome look.

Vice President Kamala Harris chose purple, a literal mix of blue and red, symbolizing solidarity between the country’s political parties for the day’s proceedings. Her choice in supporting black designers should also not be taken lightly. Emulate our first female Vice President with a purple dress and coat combination.

Vice President Kamala Harris’ niece, Meena Harris, stood out from the sea of blue and purple in monochromatic green. Green is typically viewed as representing tranquility, good luck, and health—all things we hoped for during the transition of power. Meena finished off her look in a pair of sparkly knee-high boots for good measure, which is never a bad idea!

Hillary Rodham Clinton also joined team purple, choosing a purple suit with matching blouse instead of Kamala’s dress and coat version. For our rendition we chose to take the hue a bit lighter piecing together an overall lilac look. The shade is a bit softer and can easily be worn into spring, sans coat.

Three of Biden’s granddaughters joined the monochrome memo for Wednesday’s daytime festivities. Naomi Biden stepped out in a refreshing all-white ensemble, Finnegan followed in camel, and Natalie rounded out the pack in youthful pink. Take style cues from the country’s new First Granddaughters and maximize the monochrome by including a mask in a corresponding shade (it's practical and pretty).
