Earlier this month, experts at OurFitPets conducted a study and found that Cane Corsos are the most Googled dog breed in America.

According to the article, researchers conducted “a comprehensive study…using data from the American Kennel Club and Google searches between January 2022 and January 2023.” Altogether, compiled search results for 280 breeds across the nation.

The study found interesting data about popular dog breeds

Astonishingly, Cane Corsos won by a considerable margin, with 1.32 million searches on average every month. Curiously, it was also the most popular search result in 46 out of 50 states. The only states where the Cane Corso was not the most searched breed were California, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island. In those states, the most popular breeds were Saint Bernards, Boxers, and Shiba Inus, respectively. (New Jersey and New York both chose Boxers)

Speaking of Boxers, they were the second most searched breed, with 867,800 average monthly search results. In descending order after that were French Bulldogs, Australian Shepherds, and Shiba Inus in fifth place.

Cane Corsos have an interesting backstory

Interestingly, the AKC only recently recognized as a distinct breed in 2010. However, breeders like Americana Cane Corso say the Italian Mastiff from which the breed descends traces all the way back to ancient Rome. Back then, the dogs regularly stood 28 inches tall at the shoulder, weighed over 100 pounds, and were “intimidating creatures,” per the AKC

Not surprisingly, the dog seems an obvious choice for anyone seeking companionship and home security. However, the dog’s smart and amiable personality also make it a great pet for families. An OurFitPets spokesperson commented, “While some people feel the breed can be dangerous, these Italian mastiffs can make for great companion dogs when they are properly socialized. In fact ‘corso’ actually derives from the Latin word ‘cohors,’ meaning guardian.”
