What is ‘Abunai Sisters’? Failed anime from 2009 evolves into a meme
- Oops!Something went wrong.Please try again later.
Abunai Sisters is a Japanese CGI animated series inspired by the lives of two real sisters, Kyoko and Mika Kano, who were socialities and celebrities in Japan.
During the height of their fame, the pair gained even more notoriety when they were turned into the anime series that had them starring as secret agents who spoke English. The series was produced and ran in Japan in 2009, but only two of the total 10 episodes ever aired because, as some people put it, it was one of “the worst animes ever.”
However, the Abunai Sisters have found a resurgence of popularity after inexplicably turning into a viral meme.
It still tickles me to this day when people discover the Abunai Sisters, (angrily) ask how it exists, and don’t know that nearly all the choices made in the series was made by the people the characters are based on (Kano Sisters). pic.twitter.com/FJorNfwxiV

Who are the Kano sisters?
The Kano sisters are half-sisters who were trailblazers in the influencer space and described themselves as “lifestyle consultants” on everything from living well to traveling and shopping to The New York Times in 2001.
The New York Times described the sisters as “buxom beauties” and Japan’s most famous female celebrities.
They sold everything from exercise videos to calendars and makeup, all based on their own recommendations and purported lives.
Kyoko, the older sister, also has dabbled in movie directing, and later, Mika became an actress.
The pair are still active on Instagram and run an account together, @kano_sisters007, where they display many glamorous photos of themselves dressed up.
Transition to the Abunai sisters
The Kano sisters’ transition to the Abunai sisters started with the failed CGI series, but their promotion to meme notoriety came after Twitter user @camalilium posted scenes from the series and compared them to the video game Bayonetta’s cutscenes, which most people try to skip while playing.

From there, others recognized the Abunai sisters’ show and quickly shared their own takes on the series.

And now, as memes tend to do, the Abunai sisters have found their way to trending fame on TikTok:
