Abilene Public Library Summer Reading Challenge begins June 1st

Summer is here at your Abilene Public Library (APL) and the library invites the community to take part in our Summer Reading Challenge running June through July. Visit the APL summer page online at www.abilenetx.gov/apl/SRC to find all you need to know about their summer opportunities, or keep reading for a quick rundown on getting started.

For 2024 we’re celebrating the works of author/illustrator LeUyen Pham, this year’s honoree at the Children’s Art + Literacy Festival running June 13th – 16th, and the featured artist at the National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature. As an award-winning illustrator of more than 100 books, she provides the library with a wealth of material to serve as inspiration for summer fun. APL will offer events that feature her works, host live productions of “The Itchy Book” illustrated by Pham, install a summer art installation of a tree inspired by her book “The Together Tree,” and more.

As in past years, kids, teens, and adults will be offered selection of reading and activity challenges to complete. Starting June 1st, visit your nearest branch library to pick up your summer information and begin completing your challenges including reading, attending programs, using our digital services, using a database, suggesting library programming, and more. For every challenge you complete you’ll earn five points. Complete the challenge by earning 100 points and returning your log to the library before July 31 for a chance to win great prizes funded by the Friends of the Library.

You’ll also find an amazing lineup of activities to engage in across our three locations. As always, we love to emphasize that all are available free of charge. Kids can delight in visits from the Abilene Zoo to learn about a variety of animals, attending live theatre performances through the summer Young Audiences program, getting hands-on in STEAM events to build critical thinking and reasoning skills while having fun, reading to registered therapy dogs as a great literacy activity, enjoying great movies, creating art with library staff at a city park and much more.

Teens will enjoy getting hands on with art projects, trivia nights, murder mystery gaming, craft activities and more. Plus, adults won’t be left out of the fun by having the opportunity to attend lawn and gardening workshops with the Texas Master Gardeners, socializing in our knitting & crochet club, learning about social issues to help relate better with kids in a summer series with the Noah Project, book club opportunities, and even a cake decorating opportunity.

As you look for activities to keep you and your family busy this summer, we hope you consider taking advantage of what your local library has to offer. APL says they have something for everyone to enjoy, and hope you’re up to discovering them for yourselves.
