Abandoned Puppy Attempting To Bite Everyone Is Coming Around Thanks To Shelter's Love

The Charleston Animal Society in South Carolina recently found a tiny little puppy wandering the streets. The puppy had a severe case of mange where most of her fur was missing, she was emaciated, and she was trying to bite absolutely everything and everyone.

The shelter posted the sweetest update of this little pup that they have named Petunia.

Due to the severity of her mange the shelter doesn't even know what breed of dog little Petunia is!

The post explains, "So for the last few days, we have been working with this dog who came in trying to bite everyone in the shelter. She was in extreme pain Her skin was raw and extremely hot to the touch. This poor little girl had very little hair on her and scabs. We’re still not sure what breed she is but she is turning into the sweetest little angel. She has mange just like so many of the dogs that we see brought in off the streets suffering but thank goodness her disease is treatable it will take months but I know you guys will want to follow this journey because this little girl is so so cute."

Here's how little Petunia first looked when she arrived at the shelter.

It's just so heartbreaking to see a tiny, helpless puppy in that condition but as the shelter said, she all ready looks so much better compared to how she looked when she first was found.

What is Demodectic Mange?

Demodectic mange is a skin disease caused by a mite known as Demodex canis. It is normal to find a few of these mites in most dogs, but for some reason, certain dogs do not have an immune system strong enough to fight them off and they develop infections. The mites spread through the skin and maybe even through the internal organs.

In extreme cases, hair starts falling out in patches, especially around the face and the eyes, and sometimes on the body or the legs.

The only way to tell for sure if your dog has mange is to take him to your regular vet. A small amount of skin is scraped off, put in oil, and then examined under the microscope. A dog with a mange infection will have several mites on the slide. Your vet will then determine the best course of topical and medical treatment for your pup.
