AAFA Releases Updated Restricted Substances List
The American Apparel and Footwear Association (AAFA) released the 17th edition of its Restricted Substances List (RSL), updating it to include additions and changes to chemical regulations.

As the industry’s resource for information on banned or restricted chemical substances in finished apparel, footwear and home textile products, the RSL serves to help companies maintain compliance.
In AAFA president and CEO Rick Helfenbein’s words, “The American Apparel and Footwear Association supplies our industry with valuable tools that are needed to manage a responsible and compliant supply chain, and to mitigate the associated risk.”
The latest edition includes changes to flame retardants like chlorinated paraffin’s prohibited 0.1% by weight, and the European Union’s adjusted regulation on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), which says articles placed on the market after Jan. 10, 2013, shouldn’t contain short-chain chlorinated paraffin’s (SCCPs) above 0.15% by weight.
Under phthalates, there’s the addition of 1,2-benzenedicarboxylic acid, di-C6-10-alkyl esters, and 1,2-benzenedicarboxylic acid, mixed decyl and hexyl and octyl diesters with more than 0.3% dihexyl phthalate.
