The New ’90s Club Kid Makeup, According to Opening Ceremony

Opening Ceremony turned models into ’90s club kids obsessed with Mickey Mouse.

Last night, on the grounds of Disneyland’s Mickey’s Toontown in Anaheim, California, Opening Ceremony brought fashion month to a larger-than-life close, turning models into ’90s club kids hopped up on Mickey Mouse.

The latter half of the presentation debuted the label’s new Disney capsule collection, an ode to Mickey on his 90th birthday, complete with colorful cartoon prints, kitschy patchwork knits, and swingy frocks with mouse ear–shaped shoulder detail. And synthesizing the show’s inspiration, makeup artist Thomas de Kluyver created five prismatic eye looks. Among the standouts were the dewy, watercolor-like washes of mint, violet, and tangerine on lids and the imperfect, glitter-flecked strokes of pigment blocked on brows, outer corners of the eyes, and under lash lines to frame-like effect.

“In the ’90s, these were the kind of party looks I would do on myself and friends,” says De Kluyver. Capturing the collective era nostalgia that is currently in the air and the show’s youthful energy in one fell swoop, the subversive bursts of color beg for a night out. In other words, the weekend can’t come soon enough.
