By now, you probably know that fashion is cyclical. While some trends are universally welcomed back into the zeitgeist, others are more divisive — and there’s nothing that can split a room faster than an early-aughts fashion mainstay like low-rise jeans or bubble skirts. Still, brands aren’t just reissuing the same exact styles that you wore in middle school. Instead, the 2022 versions of these ‘90s and ‘00s fashion trends are less cringe and more, well, chic. (Think less Christina Aguilera and more Aaliyah or Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.)
The right pair of low-rise trousers feel sophisticated instead of sloppy when they’re well-tailored and styled with something structured like a poplin button-down. Bubblegum pink doesn’t have to be an intimidating or juvenile color when done with confidence. And yes — it’s possible to wear lip gloss without feeling like a middle school teen. Ahead, eight ‘90s and ‘00s fashion trends making a comeback for 2022.
Low-Rise Everything
If you’ve been plugged into the fashion world in recent months, you’ll have seen this one coming: Low-rise everything is back. Get in on the trend with sophisticated trousers or a ’90s-inspired silk midi skirt, or opt for a pair of low-rise cargo pants to check two boxes on early-aughts bingo.

Body Chains
Pop singers seemed to corner the belly chain market in 2002, but the accessory has enjoyed an updated resurgence — and a bit of a rebrand. I like to wear mine with a bathing suit, as seen here, but you can also pull it off with a crop top and a silk skirt.

Bubblegum Pinks
I’m a minimalist who wears neutrals exclusively, so this one isn’t my favorite — but hot pink will be everywhere this year.

Chunky Clogs/Slides
Sky-high platforms, flatforms and clogs are back in all their ankle-breaking glory. (If you’re prone to tripping, this trend isn’t for you.) Pair yours with extra-long denim or a mini skirt.

Pleated Mini Skirts
Speaking of mini skirts, you can thank Miuccia Prada, the founder and creative director of both Prada and Miu Miu, for the return of this trend. While Miu Miu’s iteration was a low-rise, high-hem style that’s definitely not office-appropriate, you can still get in on the trend with something a little less controversial. Pair yours with a distressed, cropped sweater for a true ‘90s look or tone it down with a blazer or denim jacket for a look that you can wear to brunch and work.

Lip Gloss
If over-plucking your brows feels too permanent a trend to try, get in on a more fleeting ‘00s trend: shiny lipgloss. While you can opt for MAC Lip Glass or Lancôme’s Juicy Tube for a true throwback feel, the modern iterations of lip gloss are less sticky and more hydrating, so you won’t spend your entire morning pulling hair off your lips. (Here, I layered Tower 28 over one of my favorite matte lipsticks for a wet effect.)

Logo Everything
Logomania has been making a steady impact for years, but the all-over print took a downturn during the pandemic. Now that the world has opened up and we’re making plans again, it’s time to show off all those logo bags you stocked up on in 2019. If you’re late to the game, don’t worry: The trend’s less flashy cousin will be here for a while.
