Alexander Wang has a knack for capturing downtown cool and distilling it into the season’s must-have look. That natural talent, of course, extends to the beauty world, as the brand’s dynamic runway has given birth to a series of supercharged trends that lived on long past their debut, finding second life on the bright young things of New York City.

It was nearly four years ago that Wang sparked an industry-wide love affair with the barely there brow, when he bleached the arches of models Karlie Kloss and Fei Fei Sun to cast their angular features in a fresh, otherworldly light. Who could forget the rise of the off-kilter fringe, haphazardly snipped backstage, that’s part and parcel of his signature pre-show makeovers? Performed at the hands of hairstylist Guido Palau, the radical transformations have a habit of making careers—see Katie Moore’s punk red wedge from Fall 2016, or Lucia Stella's rose quartz dye job that ruled last season—and infuse Fashion Week with a dose of much-needed fun.

Yet not all Wang-ian trends are so extreme: The auburn dip-dyed ponytails from Fall 2013 and the lush sporty side braids from Spring 2010 were both simple, yet impactful ideas for keeping your hair off your face, easily replicated at home. Then there’s the true trademark: louche bedhead waves that recall the designer’s own trademark tousle, seen flying through the air behind him at the end of each show. Cool, effortless, and entirely Wang.
