Explore New Bodies of Water With These Stand-Up Paddleboards

When the sun is scorching, staying in an air-conditioned house is not the only way to make it through the day. We all need a way to recreate outside, and there are bodies of water everywhere, just calling your name. Even though you may not have a speedboat, kayak, or jet ski, there are plenty of other ways to enjoy water sports. Riding a stand-up paddleboard (or SUP) around a lake or along the coast is one of our favorite ways to get outside, exercise (or chill), and soak up some vitamin D.

What to Consider

Stand-up paddleboards (SUPs) come in all shapes, sizes, and styles, and the board you choose depends on how you intend to use it. Some boards are sold individually, while others come complete as a kit. When choosing a board, pay close attention to the construction, shape, and size.

Construction: Solid vs. Inflatable

• Solid stand-up paddleboards are made with an EPS foam core and wrapped with fiberglass and epoxy. They have minimal “give” on the surface, less drag, and are more stable for larger paddlers. They also require a roof rack and a large storage space at home.

• Inflatable stand-up paddleboards are much more common nowadays because you can store and transport them much more easily. They are made with a PVC exterior and an air core. They are surprisingly firm and durable when inflated, a process that takes about 10 minutes or less.

Hull Shape: Planing vs. Displacement

• Planing boards have a nose that is wide, flat, and rounded, like a surfboard. These are meant to lift up and float over the water, making them slower yet more maneuverable and best for recreational use.

• Displacement boards have a lower, pointed nose that cuts through water, like a kayak. These move naturally in a straight line, with more speed and efficiency, making them best suited for workouts, long distances, touring, and racing.

• Hybrid boards are a blend of planing and displacement for versatility.

Size: Length and Width

• Length directly affects speed and agility. Medium boards are the most common, ranging from 10 to 12 feet, and are best for recreational, all-around use. Short boards under 10 feet are good for surfing and children. Long boards over 12 feet track straighter and paddle faster, making them ideal for longer distances.

• Width directly affects stability. A board’s width is measured at the widest part under foot, ranging from about 25 inches up to 36 inches. A narrower board is more efficient but requires more skill to use. A wider board is more stable, less efficient, and thus better suited for less experienced users. If you’re not sure, a width around 32 inches is a safe place to start.
