9 Smart Ways to Get Wrinkles Out of Clothes Without an Iron
Wrinkled clothes make a statement—but it is probably not the statement you want. You can reduce wrinkles easily by ironing clothes. But what if you don't have an iron or just hate using one?
Here are nine smart ways you can get out wrinkles without using an iron.
Grab a Clothes Steamer
A handheld or floor-model clothes steamer is a must-have if you don't like to iron clothes. The steam it generates penetrates the fabric, relaxing fibers and smoothing out wrinkles while also helping to remove odors, dust, and bacteria.
Follow the directions for filling your steamer and allow the water to heat completely to help prevent sputtering before the steam appears.
Place the garment on a hanger and hang it from a clothes rack, shower curtain rod, or hook.
Hold the steamer nozzle upright at least one inch away from the fabric surface.
Straighten the fabric and hold the garment at the hem as you work.
Always allow the fabric to dry completely before wearing the garment.
Use a Wrinkle Release Spray
Commercial wrinkle release sprays work well to relax fabrics. Follow the product label directions and allow plenty of time for the garment to dry before wearing it. Most sprays work best if you hang the garment and smooth it with your hand as you spray.
Smooth Out Wrinkles With a Flat Iron
Just as a flat iron can smooth your hair, it can smooth wrinkles in clothes. A flat iron is most effective on small areas like collars and cuffs. Be sure to pay close attention as you work because excessive heat can damage some fabrics.
Toss Ice in the Dryer and Tumble the Clothes
If you don't have a steam heat cycle setting on your dryer (use it to help freshen wrinkled clothes), toss a few cubes of ice into an automatic dryer and add the wrinkled garment.
Set the dryer on high heat and let the garment tumble for at least five minutes. The ice will melt and create steam that will help relax the wrinkles. Immediately remove the garment from the dryer and hang it to dry. Smooth the fabric with your hands and straighten collars and cuffs.
Steam It Up With a Wet Towel and a Dryer
Dip a lint-free microfiber towel in water and wring until it is no longer dripping. Place the damp towel in the dryer drum and add the clean, wrinkled item. Set the cycle to medium-high heat and tumble the items for about five minutes. While the item is still damp, hang it on a sturdy hanger to finish air-drying.
Relax Wrinkles With a Steam Shower
Create a steamy bathroom by closing the doors and windows, turning off the bathroom vent fan, and turning on the shower or filling the bathtub with hot water.
Hang the garment near the steam and allow the steam to work for as long as possible. Gently tug and smooth the garment as the wrinkles relax to help smooth the fabric. Allow the garment to dry before wearing.
Use Kitchen Steam
You can use your tea kettle as a clothes steamer. Let it build a head of steam and direct the moisture toward the wrinkled item. Keep moving the kettle around and be sure to protect your hands from the heat.
Blow Out Wrinkles with a Hair Dryer
A hair dryer can generate the heat and you can add the moisture to help relax wrinkles.
Hang the garment and mist it lightly with plain water.
Direct the hair dryer toward the fabric and keep it moving across the surface.
Tug the garment at the hem to smooth it and be sure to keep the hair dryer nozzle several inches away from the fabric to prevent overheating.
Mix Up a DIY Wrinkle Remover Spray
If you find yourself having to remove wrinkles often, you can mix up a DIY wrinkle remover spray.
In a spray bottle, mix one cup of water, one teaspoon of liquid fabric softener, and one teaspoon of rubbing alcohol.
Shake well.
Hang the garment and mist the fabric lightly.
Smooth the fabric as you work. The fabric softener helps the fibers relax and the rubbing alcohol helps the liquid evaporate more quickly.
