9-Year-Old Mountain Biker Accidentally Runs Over Rattlesnake

Riding bikes carries the inherent risk of encountering wildlife, some of which can be dangerous. In some regions, this can be deadly.

Watch a nine-year-old narrowly avoid a rattlesnake bite after running it over on the trail below.

In this video, a kid was riding with his dad when he rolled into a rattler. With catlike reflexes, he jumped back off the bike and avoided getting bit.

In desert climates, it is not uncommon to see rattlers, who like to sun themselves out on mountain bike trails. It is understandable that these snakes would get defensive and threaten to strike if a big scary machine suddenly ran them over.

Still, snake bites are no laughing matter. Venom can be lethal and camouflaged snakes are very easy to be a surprise on the trail.

According to the US Forest Service, 8000 people are bitten by venomous snakes annually, 10-15 of which are fatal. The best way to stay safe is to use caution when traveling in snake territory. For more information, read the Forest Service snake safety guidelines here.
