9 Houseplants You’ll See Everywhere in 2024, According to Influencers

It’s no secret that houseplants have been having a moment over the past few years, particularly on Instagram. Hashtags like #houseplants and #indoorjungle have amassed over 10 million hits and nearly 3 million hits respectively. But unlike in 2020, which was all about quantity, 2024 is all about quality. Plant lovers are downsizing their oversized collections and increasingly being more intentional about the houseplants that they bring into their home.

That intentionality and focus means that plant pros and lovers alike are narrowing in on a few of-the-moment houseplants that you’ll see rise above the rest. To get the scoop on the hottest houseplants of 2024, I spoke to several plant enthusiasts and Instagram influencers. Here are the top nine plants they say you can expect to see everywhere this year.

Monstera Thai Constellation

If there was one houseplant that dominated all others on Instagram in 2020, it was the gorgeous Monstera deliciosa. The large, fenestrated leaves had plant lovers everywhere scrambling to get their hands on the tropical beauty. This year, nearly all the experts that I spoke to agreed that the newer and rarer variety of monstera, the monstera ‘Thai Constellation’ will be the next big “it” plant on Instagram in 2024. 

This variegated cultivar of the popular monstera deliciosa is characterized by the same large, fenestrated leaves of the deliciosa with speckled patterns of creamy white and pale green that resemble a constellation. Houseplant enthusiasts will be very familiar with the monstera ‘Thai Constellation’ already — it’s been rising in popularity for a few years now, though the astronomical prices (think: hundreds of dollars per tiny cutting) made it pretty unattainable. However, it recently became more affordable and widely available thanks to increases in production. Now, it’s possible to grab one of these beauties for under $100, which means you’ll probably see lots of this gorgeous variegated plant on Instagram this year.

Variegated Alocasia ‘Frydek’

Another variegated plant you can expect to see more of, according to Jeffrey Mercado, plant parent behind @_thevibespace, is the gorgeous and elusive variegated Alocasia ‘Frydek.’ “Variegated plants are beautiful because each leaf is a surprise — you never know what type of variegated pattern you’ll get,” Mercado says. 

This plant is likely one that you’ll see on your favorite plantfluencer’s page, since it is slightly rarer and more difficult to get your hands on than other houseplants on this list. Alocasias are also known for being notoriously picky about their growing environments, and the variegated alocasia ‘Frydek’ is even more so, which means it’s probably not the best choice for complete beginners (instead, look for low-maintenance houseplants). But if you have a little growing experience and get the chance to snag one for yourself, Mercado says you should jump on it quickly because this gorgeous plant will definitely sell out every time.

Hoyas

Hoya is a large genus of plants that are popular as houseplants thanks to their thick, waxy leaves, gorgeous blooms, and trailing growth habit. In the past, these houseplants were mostly coveted by collectors and hoya enthusiasts, but they’ve increasingly made their way into mainstream popularity.

Paul Thompson, the plant expert behind @plantmepaul, says that he expects hoyas in general to be popular on Instagram in 2024. “Hoyas still are, and will continue to be, a fan favorite among plant enthusiasts. With the plethora of various species to choose from, all with uniquely shaped and patterned leaves, there’s a lot to love about hoyas,” he says. 

Kamili Bell Hill, plant parent behind @plantberd and author of Happy Plants, Happy You agrees. “In 2024, I think Hoyas will reign supreme!” she says. “This beautiful genus of plants will finally get the widespread adoration it so rightly deserves.” She points to a few less common species that she expects we’ll see lots of this year, including the Hoya krohniana ‘splash,’ Hoya lacunosa ‘royal flush,’ and Hoya fungii.

Monstera Esqueleto

Another monstera species that Mercado predicts will take over Instagram in 2024 is the impressive Monstera esqueleto. This stunning houseplant is characterized by large, fenestrated leaves and a climbing growth habit. It looks very similar to the popular Monstera adansonii, except much larger, with its leaves reaching up to 3 feet long at maturity. Unfortunately, this monstera is a difficult one to acquire, so you probably won’t be able to pick one up at your local home center — but you can expect to see it all over your favorite “plantstagram” accounts in 2024.

Scindapsus Pictus ‘Exotica’

The Scindapsus pictus ‘Exotica’ (also called a satin pothos) is a trailing plant with thick leaves and striking silver variegation. It has a similar growth habit and care requirements to pothos plants which makes it a popular choice for plant experts and beginners alike. Its gorgeous leaves, trailing growth habit, and ease of care will make it a popular sight on Instagram in 2024, Mercado predicts. Style this beauty on a wall shelf or in a hanging planter to enjoy its long, trailing vines.

Variegated Philodendron

If the experts are correct, 2024 may be the year of variegated plants on Instagram, and you truly can’t go wrong with a variegated Philodendron. Mercado predicts that variegated philodendrons will continue to be big with the Pink Princess Philodendron, White Knight Philodendron, and White Wizard Philodendron being particularly popular.

Just like the monstera ‘Thai Constellation,’ variegated philodendrons such as these varieties were once impossibly expensive and difficult for the average houseplant lover to get their hands on. Thanks to increased production and demand, they are now much easier to find.

Ficus Audrey

If Monstera deliciosas were the most talked about plant of 2020 on Instagram, the fiddle leaf fig (Ficus lyrata) was undoubtedly the second. However, just like with the Monstera deliciosa, plant lovers’ tastes have evolved over the past few years. This year, the fiddle leaf fig’s closely related ficus Audrey (Ficus benghalensis) is set to take its place, according to Ciara Benko, the plant enthusiast behind @thejungleupstairs.

“While lush foliage with massive leaves (like the Monstera deliciosa or fiddle leaf fig) was all the rage in the last couple of years, I think there’s going to be a swing to cleaner lines and away from the dense, jungle aesthetic,” Benko says. The elegant Ficus Audrey accomplishes just that. It’s a great choice for those looking for a large statement plant to add to their space, and the slim leaves and muted colors add a touch of sophistication and elegance. Plus, many plant lovers find the ficus Audrey easier to care for than its cousin the fiddle leaf fig, which is always a bonus!

Olive Tree

In the same vein, Benko predicts that olive trees will continue to be popular in 2024, particularly among interior designers and interior design enthusiasts. Just like the Ficus Audrey, olive trees are a great option for those looking for something understated with clean, simple lines.

You’ve likely seen them adorning your favorite interior design Instagram accounts where they are styled in clean, minimalist interiors. “Interior designers are predicting bold, playful decor trends for 2024, and I’m predicting that there will be a lean towards simple, more delicate plants that complement the design vs. steal the spotlight,” Benko says.

Orchids

Orchids, with their beautiful and diverse blooms, are certainly not new in the world of houseplants, but there’s much more than the standard grab-and-go orchid you’re used to seeing at your local grocery store. This vast family of plants has captivated plant enthusiasts for centuries, and are a popular collector’s item as well. This year, Phoebe Cheong, plant expert behind @welcometothejungle and an avid orchid lover herself, says that she expects orchids to bloom in popularity (pun intended) on Instagram. 

This year, look for more variety in orchid offerings, like colors outside of the typical white and purple range and unique sizes — think giant, oversized blooms or tiny sprays of flowers. “From vibrant colors to unique shapes, each orchid is a work of living art, turning any corner into a botanical masterpiece,” Cheong says. “Their elegance and ability to thrive in various environments make them a favorite among both seasoned and new plant parents.”
