9 Fall Makeup, Hair, and Nail Looks to Copy Right Now

Whether we want to admit it or not, we are on the very cusp of fall. Just before you start breaking out your ankle booties and sweaters, tip-toe into the season by flaunting some of fall’s trendiest hair and makeup looks straight from the runways. Here, we have rolled out nine ways (everything from pretty new peach swatches to galaxy-like nails) to get you way ahead of the beauty game.

Wine-stained lips

Berry lips for fall? Honestly, not that groundbreaking. But this year, there is a twist where you can try more of deep-stained red or wine that is more diffused and not so boldly entering a room before you do. Makeup artist Val Garland for Nars Cosmetics painted the pouts of the models backstage at Erdem using Nars Red Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Consuming and the brand’s new Velvet Lip Glide. Garland was motivated by the idea of fresh skin juxtaposed with Black Dahlia–inspired lips in the spirit of 1930s Hollywood Boulevard.

All-black-everything liner

Well, you know what they say: “The eyes have it!” From the midnight feline flicks at Libertine to the beautiful smoked-out lids at Moschino, a rich, well-lined charcoal eye is not just super sexy, but it can also be interpreted in so many different ways to fit your individual style. The lead makeup artist for Libertine’s show recommends using Too Cool for School Glam Rock Extreme Color Eyes in Ecstasy to draw a strong, graphic line starting at the tear duct while keeping the liner as close to the lash line as possible. Finish by flicking it upward for more drama.

Peachy skin

Getting away from the usual deep, earthy tones that are popular in the fall, a peachy pastel is a mesmerizing alternative that we will be seeing a lot more of. Pair it with soft, matte skin and muted lips. Backstage at Desigual, lead artist Gordon Espinet for MAC Cosmetics went for what he calls “vintage-inspired makeup with a play on textures.” Try swiping on a peach-based shadow like Brule along with a few taps of Studio Eye Gloss pressed in to intensify pigment.

Vintage finger waves

Finger waves were spotted on the runways of Marc Jacobs and Salvatore Ferragamo. It is not a completely new concept, but there is a bit of a fresh spin here. With there being so many wardrobe elements from the Jazz Age and 1920s seen in a variety of collections, it was only right to have the hair follow suit. “This look is a total top-to-bottom fun, crazy Marc Jacobs girl. I created finger waves using Hardwear 16, but I modernized the look by leaving the ends of the hair alone. It feels gothic and almost boyish,” says Guido, the Redken global director and lead stylist at Marc Jacobs.

Total texture

Contrary to the usual attempt at cloning every model as seen in past Fashion Week seasons, this time around it’s about embracing individuality and celebrating real textures for a change. Designer labels, including Zac Posen, Missoni, and Louis Vuitton, clasped right on to this idea of “enhancing what you already have.” Curls, Afros, and major waves are stealing the spotlight. So if you are a girl with curls, show them off this fall! Simply wash, fluff, and go!

Cool knots

High, low, or double the fun and pulled apart, interestingly styled knots are having a major moment. If you are willing to try something youthful and fresh, go for two low Bantu knots (or buns) similar to what Guido created for Christian Dior. After securing and knotting each, finish with a holding spray such as Control Addict 28 to keep the look solid and intact. If you want a classier take, try a low chignon, with a few pieces of spiked hair pulled from the sides.

The updated heavy-metal nail lacquers of today will keep you fresh and on trend and also wear well into winter holiday parties as the perfect conversation starter. Take a cue from the lead artist at Creatures of the Wind, Danielle Candido, and brush on foil-like shades such as Morgan Taylor Could Have Foiled Me, Give Me Gold, and Bronzed and Beautiful.

The new rouge

It seems like you can never really go wrong with traditional red polish. Well, as we get deeper into the season, why not heighten the hue with rich oxbloods and maroons? This not-so-traditional ruby paint was seen everywhere, from Tanya Taylor to Mansur Gavriel. Another great thing about this new take on the classic red manicure is that it coordinates with every outfit, so you don’t have to worry about any wardrobe clashes in color.
